Weightlifting
There are many rules to follow in Olympic Weightlifting, but most of the are not important to you, the viewer at home. I've listed below the main rules that you will find helpful to know when watching the Olympics. For the athlete interested in competitive weightlifting, I've included useful links where more specific information can be found. However, just as I recommend for competitive bodybuilding, the hiring of a coach for being successful at competition is invaluable; even more in this sport where expert execution of the lift is a must.
Athletes in the sport are divided in several weight classes and placing is based on the total weight lifted on the two main lifts.
Judo
Judo is a relatively modern martial art, created by Professor Jigoro Kano in the late 19th century. Its roots lie in Ju Jutsu, which was the original art used by the Samurai. Kano wanted to create a form of ju-jutsu that he could practice without fear of serious injury, and so Judo was born. It is a system of unarmed combat where the aim is to grapple with your opponent, and win by throwing them to the floor, pinning them to the floor for 25 seconds, or performing a strangle or jointlock until they submit.
How to play: water polo rules
Water polo is a rapidly growing sport in the United States and internationally as well. For anyone involved in playing or being a spectator, it is important to understand the rules of the game.
Teams are composed of about 12 players, depending on rules of the league. Seven players are in the pool at a time, which includes one goalie and six field players. Each field player plays both offense and defense, and the goalie is not allowed on the other half of the pool. There are many different arrangements of players in front of the goal (which may be attached to the pool deck or free floating on lane lines). The location of the players depends on the play that is being run, similar to basketball or hockey.

bowling rules
The playing surface is an alley, or lane, approximately 78 feet long and 41 to 42 inches wide. On either side of the alley are gutters; if the ball goes off the edge of the alley, it will drop into the gutter and be carried past the pins. The approach is an area 15 feet long, ending at the foul line. The bowler, in making the approach, must not step over the line; 60 feet beyond it is the headpin. The pins are arranged in four rows, with one pin in the first row, two in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth. They are numbered as shown in the diagram; the pins themselves don't carry specific numbers, but the spots on which they are placed do.
Tag team wrestling
In professional wrestling, a tag team consists of two or more wrestlers who are working together as a team. They usually wrestle against a like number of opponents, however in the occasional "handicap match" there may be an unequal number of competitors (Andre the Giant was often pitted against two or more opponents). The term "tag team" has since become used in a metaphorical sense for a pair of partners who alternate in participation in an activity, and "tag-teaming" for the act of alternating with an ally, e.g. a couple tag-teaming in an argument with another person.
Running
You should ease into your running program gradually. In fact, the beginners' program we outline here is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you running three miles (or 5K) on a regular basis in just two months.
It's easy to get impatient, and you may feel tempted to skip ahead in the program, but hold yourself back. Don't try to do more, even if you feel you can. If, on the other hand, you find the program too strenuous, just stretch it out. Don't feel pressured to continue faster than you're able. Repeat weeks if needed and move ahead only when you feel you're ready.

Water polo
Water polo is a team water sport. The playing team consists of six field players and one goalkeeper. The winner of the game is the team that scores the most goals by getting the ball past the opposing team's goalkeeper into the net. Gameplay involves swimming, players passing the ball while being defended by opponents, and scoring by throwing into a net defended by a goalie. Water polo, therefore, has strong similarities to the land-based game of team handball. The frequency of 'man-up' (or 'power play') situations also draws comparisons with Ice hockey.
Bodybuilding
Bodybuilding is a form of body modification involving intensive muscle hypertrophy; an individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. In competitive bodybuilding, bodybuilders display their physiques to a panel of judges, who assign points based on their appearance. The muscles are revealed through a process known as the "cutting phase" - a combination of fat loss, oils, and tanning (or tanning lotions) which combined with lighting make the definition of the muscle group more distinct.
Well-known bodybuilders include Charles Atlas, Steve Reeves, Reg Park, Devin McKillop, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Lou Ferrigno. Currently, three-time winner Jay Cutler holds the title of Mr. Olympia as the world's top bodybuilder.

Equestrian sport of polo
In the equestrian sport of polo the object of the game is to move the polo ball down-field, hitting it through the goal for a score.
Polo is an equestrian team sport, usually played outdoors, with four polo players on each team.
A polo field is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide, the largest field in organized sport.
A polo match lasts about two hours and is divided into 6 timed periods called chukkers.
During half time, spectators go onto the field to participate in a social tradition called divot stomping.

The ancient Olympics
The ancient Olympics were rather different from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different sites every time. Like our Olympics, though, winning athletes were heroes who put their home towns on the map. One young Athenian nobleman defended his political reputation by mentioning how he entered seven chariots in the Olympic chariot-race.

Basic Soccer Rules
Obviously, these guys were playing along to some basic soccer rules, but without a referee to enforce them, or clear specifications to these rules. For example, what would have been considered a foul in Liverpool might have been accepted as a fair tackle in London.
Climbing
Climbing is the activity of using one's hands and feet (or indeed any other part of the body) to ascend a steep object. It is done both for recreation (to reach an inaccessible place, or for its own enjoyment) and professionally, as part of activities such as maintenance of a structure, or military operations.
5 Styles of Wrestling
There are currently five styles of amateur wrestling practiced in the United States, each with separate rules, techniques, and emphasis. Wrestlers with a strong background in only one style, and little experience in the others, sometimes have difficulty adjusting to an opponent who uses the stronger techniques from a different style to attack. For this reason, most successful coaches stress that their wrestlers learn as many styles as they can to develop their own unique techniques. This becomes particularly important if the wrestler plans to compete at the college level or in national competitions.
All he touches turns to gold
By the time Mark Spitz touched the tile at the end of his butterfly leg in the men's 400-meter medley relay on Sept. 4, 1972, the outcome was a foregone conclusion.
Another gold medal.
Another world record.
Seven of each.
A feat never achieved -- never even close -- by any Olympian.
Spitz brazenly had predicted as an 18-year-old four years earlier that he would win six gold medals in Mexico City, then failed to win an individual race. He came away with only two golds, from the 400 and 800 freestyle relays, plus silvers in the 100 butterfly and bronze in the 100 free.
By the start of the Munich Olympics, though, Spitz was expected to dominate the swimming events, but the 22-year-old Californian had learned his lesson. No bragging. No predicting. Just do it.
It began with an easy victory in the 200 butterfly. A few hours later he was the anchor on the 400 freestyle relay.

Owens spoils Hitler's party
The 1936 Berlin Olympics were to be Adolf Hitler's stage to validate Aryan superiority, the Nazis' belief in a master race. In three races and one long jump, American Jesse Owens, as much as anyone, laid waste that philosophy
In a performance that would remain unmatched for 48 years, Owens won four track and field gold medals in the same Summer Olympiad, setting three world records and one Olympic record. He was born James Cleveland Owens in Oakville, Ala., on Sept. 12, 1913, the son of a sharecropper. After his family moved to Ohio, he became known as Jesse, derived from his initials J.C.
Badminton Rules
A badminton match comprises the best of three games. A coin is tossed before the first game, and the winner of the toss may serve first or pick an end of the court. In Classic scoring format, only the serving side can score and the winning team needs 15 points in doubles and men's singles, or 11 in women's singles. In the new Rally Point scoring format that just recently adopted and used for major tournaments, whoever won the rally scores a point and the winning team needs 21 points to win the match.

Cricket
Cricket is played with two teams of eleven players , with two umpires
(referees) on an oval shaped field. The size of the field varies, but
generally has a diameter of around 350 yards. A cricket bat is oblong
shaped with a narrow handle. A full-sized bat is around 3 feet in
length. A cricket ball is made of cork and covered with leather, and
is then stitched up. A ball weighs around 5 ounces.
In the middle of the field is what is known as a pitch. A pitch is a
hard, flat strip of dry ground around 22 yards long. 22 yards is an
old imperial measure called a chain. Two batsman are at the pitch at a
time, both at different ends, with one facing the delivery of the ball
from the bowler.
